Botox is probably one of the biggest products in the medspa industry. Botox though, is just a brand name for neuromodulators (like Xeomin, another product we use) but it’s the most well known one so that’s why this article is all about Botox.
What is Botox?
Botox is a neuromodulator that is mainly used to reduce lines on the face. This product also has many other clinical uses which we’ll discuss below.
Botox’s medical name is Botulinum toxin (although that doesn’t sound too fun, does it?). It’s an organism produce from a bacterium. It then goes through a purification process and can then be used in your treatments.
What are the uses?
The most widely known use of Botox is for reducing fine lines and wrinkles. But Botox has also been found to help with clinical issues as well.
These medical uses include:
- Hyperhydrosis (Excessive sweating)
- Eye twitching
- Muscle spasms
- Chronic migraines
- Overactive bladder
How does it work?
The product works by gradually relaxing the muscles to allow lines and wrinkles to appear smooth. A professional will administer injections to specific problem areas. There’s no need for anesthesia for this procedure and you can start seeing results within 3-7 days.
As a neuromodulator, Botox blocks neurotransmitters. By blocking those that go to your muscle receptors telling them to contract, Botox can now temporarily paralyze this contracting process.
How often do I need Botox?
Botox can often last for up to 3-4 months depending on the dosage and injections received. If you’re looking to have results last this long, make sure to let your provider know.
If you’re looking to have a long term Botox use, consult with your provider to find out a schedule that works for you in order for you to see the results you want.
