Nobody likes to get wrinkled. The beauty industry abounds with “cures” and “miracle formulas” to rid you of wrinkles and prevent them from happening. Wrinkles are creases in the skin that appear as we age. You may also notice temporary wrinkles if you soak in the tub too long. Other causes of wrinkles include sun damage, dehydration, smoking, and even some medications.
Why do we wrinkle as we age?
It’s an inevitable part of our lives. As we get older, our body goes through many changes. Every year your body changes in subtle ways, but these changes grow more noticeable as we reach old age. When we’re older, our skin gets thinner, less elastic, and more dry. Our skin also is no longer able to prevent sun damage as well as it once did.
You may notice some people at age 70 with barely any wrinkles, while others are full of them. The reason here is genetics. This is a major influence as to how wrinkled you will get and when they will start to appear. So look to your older relatives to see their signs of aging.
How do I prevent wrinkles?
There is no cure or prevention for wrinkles, they’re just a fact of life. But you can help reduce their effects. Start by protecting your skin from the sun at a young age. This means wearing sunscreen and skin-protecting clothes while outdoors.
Smoking has also been linked to a faster aging of the skin. Blood flow is reduced when you smoke which leads to a lower supply that runs to the skin.
Certain jobs can put you at risk for more wrinkles. These tend to be outdoor jobs like sailors, farmers, and construction workers.
How can I get rid of wrinkles?
While there is no overall solution, there are some treatments you can use to help reduce their appearance. Microdermabrasion can help remove the outer layer of skin, giving you a fresh and smooth appearance. It can also help reduce lines and wrinkles.
Botox has been found to help with forehead and frown line wrinkles.
