Looking to permanently get rid of those pesky unwanted hairs on the face and body? Electrolysis can be the key to making you fuzz-free.

Electrolysis has been on the scene since the late 1800s and involves permanently removing individual hairs on the face and body with chemical or heat energy. After a fine stainless steel probe is inserted into the hair follicle, a small amount of electric current is introduced into the base of the follicle where the growth center of the hair is located.

The current destroys the hair root and supporting structures and is removed with a tweezer. If electrolysis is performed effectively, the hair should slide out of the follicle with no tweezing sensation.

Most areas of the body can be treated with electrolysis, including the eyebrows, face, ears, abdomen, thighs, back, bikini area, breasts and legs.

According to Ron Brunette, electrolysis instructor and president of the Florida School of Electrolysis and Skincare in Port Charlotte, women, men and teens can be affected with unwanted hair. This condition can also be a problem for transgendered clients.

Brunette said this problem for many people stems from from heredity, hormone imbalances during puberty, pregnancy and menopause, endocrine disorders/diseases and medication. He says that electrolysis offers people an FDA-approved permanent method of hair removal. The amount of treatment time can vary with each person’s condition.

Brunette said that with laser hair removal, darker pigmented hairs on lighter skin can be treated, but lasers cannot destroy hair that has little or no pigment including red, blond, gray or white hairs.

“With the combination of both laser hair removal and electrolysis, clients can get excellent results,” he said.
“ We are also seeing more men these days seeking electrolysis to clear up folliculitis, (ingrown hairs) and to sculpt or clean up the borders of their beards and sideburns. Electrolysis can permanently provide the look they want, cutting down on grooming time,” Brunette said.

He also said electrolysis is a great idea to permanently sculpt eyebrows into a desired shape.

• Cost: Electrolysis is typically priced per amount of time the client is treated at each session. In Southwest Florida, a 15-minute session ranges from $20-$40, a 30-minute session ranges from $40-$60 and a one-hour session ranges from $65-$100.
